Swedish Massage

Are you suffering from a stiff neck from sitting at a computer all day? Sometimes a simple stretch just won’t cut it. That’s where massage therapy comes to the rescue.

When thinking about massage, Swedish massage is usually the first thing that comes to mind. Pioneered by Swedish physiologist Per Henrik Ling at the University of Stockholm in the 1700s, Swedish massage endures as one of the world’s most popular forms of massage. It involves using oil and kneading it in with long, soft strokes and light rhythmic tapping on the topmost muscles. Generally speaking, Swedish massage uses a lighter touch, with pressure customized to your liking paired with calming aromatherapy.

The five basic strokes of a Swedish massage are effleurage (long strokes), friction (circular rubbing motions), petrissage (kneading of the muscles), vibration (rapidly shaking muscles), and tapotement (tapping on the body). Your massage therapist will utilize these techniques throughout your session to break up muscle knots or adhered tissues that are giving you grief. If a particular area on your body is bothering you, such as a tight neck, feel free to ask your therapist to spend more time on the area.

The goal of Swedish massage is to decrease muscle toxin levels, ease tension, and create a full-body sense of relaxation. Studies show that massage can reduce chronic muscle and joint pain, improve mobility, and diminishes fatigue. So go ahead, give yourself a rejuvenating experience that will leave you feeling invigorated and ready to take on the world.
