Over 12 million Americans have already turned to acupuncture for help, and each year millions more use acupuncture as a part of their health care program.
The World Health Organization recognizes acupuncture as an effective treatment stating that, “the sheer weight of evidence demands that acupuncture must be taken seriously as a clinical procedure of considerable value.”
Are the Needles Clean?
Acupuncture needles are regulated by the FDA. Most acupuncturists in the U.S. today use pre-sterilized and disposable needles, thus insuring there is no transmission of a communicable disease from patient to patient due to contaminated needles.
…it strengthens the immune system by increasing T-cell counts. This may be why it works on allergies and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
…it releases pain-killing endorphins, which also play a big role in the functioning of the hormonal system. This is why acupuncture works well for back pain, arthritis, and also for anxiety, PMS and ulcers.
…endorphins, which are released through acupuncture, not only relax the whole body when released, but also regulate serotonin in the brain which plays a big part in our moods. This is why depression is often treated with acupuncture.
…it breaks the spasm cycle which muscles can get “caught” in, causing unrelenting tightness and pain. It does this by increasing circulation which in turn provides needed nutrients to nerves and muscles to begin healing.
…acupuncture works with the “life force” or “Qi” (chee), which is similar to electrical circuitry, that runs throughout our bodies. It taps into specific points along this circuitry and balances the energy connecting all of our major organs.
Do I Have to Believe in Acupuncture for It to Work?
No. Acupuncture is used successfully on cats, dogs, horses and other animals. These animal patients do not understand or believe in this treatment, but that does not prevent them from getting well.
A positive attitude towards wellness may reinforce the effects of the treatment received, just as a negative attitude may hinder the effects of acupuncture or any other treatment. A lack of belief (“I don’t know if I really believe in this.…”) will not block treatment results.
Your First Visit
Your first visit with an acupuncturist will be much like a visit with any health care provider. You will exchange information with the acupuncturist to help diagnose your condition.
Your acupuncturist will then discuss the types of therapies that can be used to treat you. This may include acupuncture, herbs, acupressure, massage, nutrition, exercise, etc.
A patient may feel a slight sensation upon needle insertion. The tiny, thin needles are uniquely designed to be virtually painless, although the condition of the patient will be the determining factor of the sensations felt.
